HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A new ono local treat is making its debut this week. Shaka Tea and Asato Family Shop are collaborating on a new Mango Mamaki Tea Sorbet this summer.
Winston Taira, the president & CEO of Shaka Tea, and Neale Asato, the owner of Asato Family Shop stopped by Wake Up 2Day on Thursday to share the delicious details.
"One of our passions is supporting other local family businesses, so we thought Shaka Tea would be the perfect partner to create a no-sugar-added sorbet, inspired by Shaka Tea’s Mango Hibiscus tea. We combined our mango sorbet with māmaki tea, etc," Asato said.
Shaka Tea is a Hilo-based company that is a sister company to King’s Hawaiian, which also started in Hilo. Taira is proud of using local ingredients.
"Our teas are made with māmaki, a rare herbal tea that’s only found on Hawaii," he said. "We work with local farmers on Hawaii Island to source our māmaki and we dry the māmaki at our headquarters in Hilo. Māmaki is naturally caffeine-free so Shaka Tea is something you can enjoy anytime. All of our teas are zero sugar, zero calories, and zero carb, but they’re infused with tropical botanical flavors, so they’re still fun to drink. A popular flavor is our mango hibiscus tea, which the Mango Māmaki Tea sorbet is based off of, so it’s been fun to partner with Neale to transform this flavor in frozen form to offer people with a no sugar added sorbet option,"
You can get a taste of the new collaboration at a special pop-up at Foodland Farms Ala Moana on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
"Come by to try the Mango Māmaki Tea sorbet. You can purchase pints of the sorbet and cans of Shaka Tea," Neale said. "We did a pop-up last weekend at KTA Puainako and the turnout was great, so we’re excited to be at Foodland Farms Ala Moana to launch the Mango Māmaki Tea sorbet on Oahu."
