WAIKIKI, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Honolulu police officers responded to a barricade situation on Liliuokalani Ave. and Ala Wai Blvd. Thursday night.
In a news conference, HPD confirmed the suspect involved in the barricade was the same suspect wanted in three bank robberies that were committed earlier this month.
Officers reported a man, who looked like the suspect, walked into a Waikiki condo and looked like he was armed.
Around 8 p.m., Honolulu police evacuated nearby residents as crisis negotiators attempted to speak with the suspect, who barricaded himself in a unit that was not his own.
Officials said the suspect refused to communicate with law enforcement by phone. HPD officials sent a drone to monitor the outside of the condo.
Officials were able to confirm the suspect was armed after he was seen pointing a firearm at the drone.
According to police, less lethal chemical canisters and rounds of pepper spray into the unit for several hours.
Around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, the suspect then exited the unit and pointed his firearm at officers, where they then shot and killed the suspect. No other injuries were reported.
Honolulu police will source available video from nearby apartments.
The incident remains under investigation.
