University of Hawaii football standout receiver Steven McBride was arrested on felony abuse charges Saturday, leaving his status on the team in limbo.

McBride has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities. The first practice of fall camp for the Rainbow Warriors will be held on Wednesday, one month in advance of its season opener against Delaware State on Aug. 24.

McBride, who played his first three years of collegiate football for Kansas, made an immediate impact in his first season for UH in 2023, racking up a team-high 1,024 receiving yards with nine touchdowns.

An arrest report from Saturday says McBride assaulted his girlfriend in the presence of their child at the couple's home.

“The University of Hawaiʻi takes any allegation of domestic violence very seriously," UH said in a statement. "The university can confirm that Steven McBride is a student-athlete on the 2024-2025 football roster, and that UH has received notification that he was detained. Per our Student-Athlete Handbook, any student facing felony charges will be automatically suspended from participation in intercollegiate athletics, pending further processes occurring. The appropriate UH officials have been notified."
