HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The iconic Falls of Clyde may soon be leaving Honolulu Harbor as the state Department of Transportation announced Thursday it is seeking proposals for its removal.
A recent state environmental assessment concluded that the nearly 146-year-old vessel, which has been dry-docked at the harbor for years, should be either disassembled or sunk.
The report deemed repair efforts unfeasible and noted that acquiring a third party to preserve the ship is unlikely.
Interested bidders must adhere to several guidelines, according to Dre Kalili, deputy director of transportation for harbors.
“Efforts should be made to mitigate the loss of coral and to follow best practices for monitoring protected species, such as green sea turtles, that might be near the project site. Additionally, a plan to remove significant artifacts from the vessel should be considered,” Kalili said.
The chosen contractor will decide on the method of removal for the 280-foot vessel.
