HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Kauhale I Ke Kula Uka, formerly known as the Kaloko Heights Affordable Housing Project in Kailua-Kona, will begin accepting applications from families on Monday, July 29, through August 12.
“We are thrilled to share this opportunity with our community," Mayor Mitch Roth said. "Our goal remains to provide homes for as many local families as possible. With 99 new family units now available in the heart of Kailua-Kona, we are making significant progress towards that goal. We extend our gratitude to everyone involved in developing these incredible units and encourage everyone to share this information with friends and family who may be eligible.”
Interested parties must ensure their applications are delivered or postmarked by August 12 to be included in the initial lottery for eligibility and tenant selection. Applications received after this deadline or not selected will be placed on a waitlist.
Kauhale I Ke Kula Uka features 99 family units, comprising 58 three-bedroom units and 41 two-bedroom units, all available for families earning up to 60% of area median income.
The units are situated in six two-story and three-story garden-style buildings, equipped with solar water heating, laundry facilities, and appliances such as ranges, ovens, refrigerators, and garbage disposals.
A centrally located community center will offer on-site property management, a kitchen, private meeting rooms, a gathering space, and mailboxes.
Construction of the affordable housing project is projected to be finished by this fall, with families expected to begin moving in by December 2024.
The project's funding comes from a combination of tax-exempt bonds, Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), Rental Housing Revolving Fund (RHRF), HOME, Housing Trust Fund, and the Project-Based Voucher (PBV) Program.
