HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Nine United States veterans will be honored on Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Maunalani Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Kaimuki, in recognition of National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day.
One of the honorees, Mr. Joseph Kalaukoa, will be recognized following his recent death.
National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day is observed annually on July 27 to honor those who served and died during the war, which lasted from 1950 to 1953.
Among the veterans being recognized is Mr. Andres Aguillon of Ewa Beach, who served in the U.S. Army from 1947 to 1969 and spent two years in South Korea during the Korean War.
The event will also commemorate the legacy of Mr. Kalaukoa, who was drafted into the United States Marine Corps in 1950 and served in South Korea during the Korean Conflict until 1953.
Special guests at the ceremony will include Ms. Suhyun Son, the Defense Attaché from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea, and Col. Walter M. Ozawa, Ret., a former Battalion Commander of the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry, and former Deputy Commander of the Pacific U.S. Army Reserve.
Maunalani Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility for seniors and is recognized as a VA-preferred provider for U.S. veterans residing in Hawaii.
In a previous ceremony on Veterans Day 2023, the center honored 31 veterans, including two World War II Nisei veterans.
The upcoming event aims to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of those who fought in the Korean War and to foster community remembrance and appreciation for veterans.
