HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Trials to develop sustainable aviation fuel are underway in Hawaii.
Pono Pacific is partnering with PAR Hawaii to establish four farms across Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai to cultivate camelina.
This crop is intended to produce plant-based oil, which will be converted into renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.
Researchers estimate that camelina-based jet fuel can reduce net carbon emissions by approximately 80 percent.
PAR Hawaii has announced a $90 million investment to advance the production of renewable fuels, with operations expected to begin next year.
