HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Senior U.S. District Court Judge Alan Kay has passed away at the age of 92.
Judge Kay, a lifelong resident of Honolulu, was an esteemed figure in the legal community.
He graduated from Punahou School, Princeton University, and the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.
Nominated to the federal bench by President Ronald Reagan on July 3, 1986, Judge Kay received his commission later that year.
He served as Chief Judge from 1991 to 1999 before assuming senior status in 2020.
Among his notable rulings, Judge Kay decided in 2003 that Kamehameha Schools' admissions policy was constitutional and did not violate federal law.
He also played a key role in preventing the termination of the joint operating agreement between the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin in 1999.
