HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The Department of Water Supply (DWS) has lifted the Unsafe Water Advisory for areas L-5 and L-6, declaring water in Lahaina's public water system is safe to drink.

This advisory was initially issued on August 11, 2023, following the Maui wildfires, which had unknown impacts on the area's water supply.

The fires had destroyed structures in the water system and caused pressure losses in Upper Kula and Lahaina, potentially introducing contaminants.

The DWS has been working with the Hawai'i State Department of Health and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where they conducted extensive sampling and testing, isolated damaged sections, and continuously monitored water quality.

While the advisory for these areas has been updated, property managers of privately owned water systems are still responsible for testing the water on their premises.

Residents are being asked to flush their lines for at least 10 minutes before using the water.
