HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Upcountry residents on Maui are struggling with insurance and permitting issues after dozens of homes were destroyed in the Kula area last August.
One resident remembered feeling helpless watching his home catch fire.
Some said they're behind in rebuilding because they have to switch to septic tanks, and aren't grandfathered into old sewer systems.
"We're pushing the government and the powers that be to pay a little more attention to us and help us out like they are for Lahaina - they can keep their cesspools why can't we?" said Kula resident Ross Hart.
He added he's received much support from across the globe and is grateful he's found a place to stay until he's able to move back into his Kulalani home next year.
