It's important for everyone to understand how to navigate them. But for kupuna, roundabouts can be intimidating.

"I just got a little confused. There was a car here, and I really wasn't sure if it was going to go straight or turn. So that you really have to pay attention," said kupuna Angie Ishihara.

Roundabouts are designed to slow people down and bring attention to both those who are driving counterclockwise as well as people crossing the roads.

Walking is a healthy activity for seniors, so caregivers can help in two ways:

  • Instruct their loved one to know what to do when crossing at a roundabout
  • Educate loved ones, especially young drivers, about the rules and the importance of staying alert at a roundabout

Know where the crosswalks are. Cross in the crosswalks, the crosswalks are designed to keep you at the most visible point in the roadway for all drivers. As we see, there is a pedestrian crossing right here. No one's in there. But again, you want to go slow yield means potentially stop. The speed limit is 25 and then the reduced speed limit is usually 15 miles an hour, there's a yield sign and a pedestrian sign. So we should predict that somebody's going to be crossing and get ready to stop for them. So if I'm going to take a left hand turn, I do have the right of way, and that driver is to stop for myself.
