HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The suspect connected to what prosecutors call a "murder-for-hire" plot has been found fit for trial.
On Monday, a judge made the ruling following a fitness evaluation. Court documents showed that Sebastian Mahkwan's attorney said Mahkwan was hearing voices and was placed on suicide watch.
Mahkwan is accused of carrying out a planned acid attack that severely injured a 25-year-old teacher in the Ala Moana area in January.
In mid-March, the Honolulu Police Department held a news conference connecting the Ala Moana chemical attack to a 2023 acid attack that happened outside a Mililani fitness center.
According to police, the Mililani chemical suspect, Paul Cameron, met and befriended Mahkwan while they were in the same module at Oahu Community Correctional Center.
Officials said Cameron planned the Ala Moana acid attack to cast doubt on his pending case involving a chemical attack on Cameron's ex-girlfriend.
HPD added that Cameron instructed Mahkwan on how to carry out the crime and in exchange, Cameron would arrange for Mahkwan's bail.
Both Cameron and Mahkwan are being held without bail on attempted murder charges.
A new trial has been scheduled for August.
