HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The 'Bows are back! This weekend the University of Hawaii football team will kick off their 2024 season against Delaware State at Clarence TC Ching Stadium. UH Athletics Director Craig Angelos joined Wake Up 2Day live to talk about the season and how he's handling the massive amounts of change in college athletics.

"First of all we want to have a lot of fans out there, I think we've got a better team this year," Angelos said of head coach Timmy Chang's 2024 squad. "We've got a lot of good things to look forward to. We're trying to produce a lot of in-game experiences and get as many fans out there as we can. We hired a ticket sales staff this year so hopefully they're able to help bring the fans to the table. I'm excited about the season. Timmy's got a good group of guys and I think the talent level is even better than it's ever been so I think the optimism is very high."

This fall marks the beginning of the second year in Angelos' term in charge of the department. He said what he took over from former AD David Matlin was a "good operation."

"I inherited a very good program. Keep in mind we won six conference championships last year. None of that had to do with me but we won six conference championships. We've got a good group of people out there. It was a good year to look and listen and learn and feel for what it's like out here and what we can improve on, maybe what things are going well and try to chart a course going forward to try to make some improvements. Continue to move the program along and also adjust to all of the new things that are happening in college athletics which is just mind-blowing this year with all of the new developments,"

Those developments include increased scholarship allotments in certain sports, name image and likeness rules and a multi-billion dollar settlement from the NCAA that can grant revenue sharing.

"I think that's the challenge not just at our level but at the Power 4 level because with this house settlement, this $2.8 billion settlement that people probably heard about, it's affecting all of college athletics," Angelos said. "It's a real issue about chasing and monetizing money because everything now costs and it's going up and up. I think we have a lot of advantages here, we've got great place to come to. I think the transfer portal helps us a little bit because maybe our top players or top players on the continent might want to transfer and come back and play a year or two here. So we've got to stress our strengths and try and be competitive. We're trying to get in the NIL space the collectives the name, image, and likeness programs for our players. Trying to chart the course. I had an NIL summit with all of the leaders in our community this week to talk about how can we all work together to try to bolster our own NIL program that will help retain players and attract players? It's an ongoing battle."

One of the changes UH is looking forward to is the New Aloha Stadium Entertainment District, which has zeroed in on a developer and is on track for a 2028 opening.

"We're hoping to open in 2028 against Kansas. That's the goal and we're very much behind the Halawa project. We really want to go for it. They're getting down to the last developer right now and they'll have nine months to negotiate a contract to see if it can come about and hopefully it will. Because if we can get out there and have that beautiful new stadium out there and we can do some renovations on our own campus and facility upgrades there I think we can be very well set," Angelos said.

Hawaii's kickoff against Delaware State is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday night and will be broadcast on Spectrum Sports Pay-Per-View.
