Though Hone slowly made its way past the Big Island, residents can still expect gusty winds and heavy widespread rainfall.

Hawaiian Airlines has canceled all flights to and from Hilo for the rest of Sunday, due to Hurricane Hone. Two additional roundtrip flights will fly the route Monday.

Southwest Airlines canceled 13 flights, primarily Hilo flights. However, the airline said customers have flexibility on their tickets at major Hawaii airports.

According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the following road closures have been announced:

Big Island Closures

The DOE announced that Kaʻū High, Pāhala Elementary and Nāʻālehu Elementary Schools will be closed Monday due to hazardous road conditions. All other DOE schools are scheduled to open as usual.

  • Highway 11 in Milolii due to downed tree on power lines
  • One lane at Marker Point 14 on Highway 11 due to downed tree
  • Route 270 at Marker Point 14 near Lapakahi State Park due to downed tree
  • Highway 11 in Kau from MP 66.5 to 66 due to flooding

HECO said in a 9:30 p.m. news release that power had been restored to most customers in North Kohala, Volcano and Punalu'u and that about 1,800 remained without power. Additional crews from Oahu will arrive on the Big Island to assist.

Shelters were closed Sunday night.

Other islands also felt the effects of Hurricane Hone.

Maui Road Closures

  • Hana Highway near Upper Waikani Falls and from MM 6 to 15 due to debris
  • Olinda Road fronting Seabury Hall both directions due to large tree down with lines
  • One lane at MM 20 on Hana Highway near Upper Waikani Falls blocked by rocks

A newly issued Countywide wind warning, MEMA asked the public to avoid the roadways on Sunday due to potential landslides, road closures and other impacts of Hurricane Hone.

“All motorists are asked to limit non-essential travel today to avoid any dangerous conditions and to allow highways crews to remove landslide material, fallen trees and debris,” said Amos Lonokailua-Hewett, MEMA Administrator.

HECO said all but 74 customers' power had been restored.

Customers "will remain offline overnight due to safety conditions out in the field, including the clearing of downed trees on roads."
