HONOLULU (KHON2) — Grounded flights, power outages, and flooding are some of the major issues the state is dealing with as Hurricane Hone passes the islands.
Families waiting for their loved ones back home on the Big Island and Maui may have to wait a little longer.
As of Sunday afternoon, Hawaiian Airlines canceled ten flights to and from Hilo. Southwest Airlines canceled 13 flights from both Hilo and Maui.
"They delayed us a couple of times and then finally the last one they canceled," stated Kahale Huddleston, a resident from Hilo.
The Big Island is getting the brunt of Hurricane Hone.
"My husband said it's been raining and windy and tree branches falling down on our property," said Hilo resident, Susan Mirles. "All the electricity had gone out this morning."
Strong winds on Maui are also becoming a problem as the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) works to clear roads of fallen trees.
"The current rain has caused some landslides that our crews are addressing right now," stated Amos Lonokailua-Hewett, MEMA Administrator. "Limiting any kind of non-essential travel, avoiding the roadways is really important at this time."
Hawaiian Electric (HECO) said its crews continue work in hazardous conditions while thousands are left without power.
"With the high winds and the rains, they've been causing damage to lines and that has been affecting service to our customers," said Darren Pai, HECO Spokesperson. "We've had crews working since yesterday dealing with these outages and responding and trying to get the power back on as quickly as we can."
