HONOLULU (KHON2) -- As summer vacation wraps up and families plan their final trips, ensuring that everyone gets enough rest while traveling can make a big difference in how enjoyable the trip turns out.

Traveling with keiki, in particular, can be challenging when it comes to sleep. And with hurricanes a plenty this season, understanding how to ensure you and your family get enough sleep is paramount to a safe experience.

But according to sleep experts, there are some simple strategies that can help both parents and keiki rest better during journeys, whether by plane, train, or automobile.

First and foremost, maintaining a consistent bedtime routine is key for helping keiki sleep during long trips.

Bringing along their favorite blanket or bedtime story can provide a sense of comfort and familiarity, making it easier for them to relax and fall asleep.

Experts also suggested that scheduling travel during their usual nap or bedtime could make a world of difference. When keiki feel secure, they’re more likely to sleep soundly, even in an unfamiliar environment.

Adults, too, can take steps to make their travel experience more comfortable. Loose, comfortable clothing is a must, as tight clothing can restrict circulation and lead to discomfort, especially on long flights.

While some travelers swear by compression socks to help with circulation, experts advise against wearing tight shoes, especially when trying to sleep.

Loosening your shoelaces, or better yet, opting for slip-on shoes, can help prevent your feet from going numb and promote better circulation, making for a more restful journey.

Sticking to a regular sleep schedule is another crucial tip. For those crossing time zones, starting to adjust your sleep pattern a few days before departure can help reduce the effects of jet lag.

Limiting screen time before attempting to sleep is also recommended, as the blue light from screens can interfere with your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.

Temperature control is another important factor in getting quality sleep while traveling. Research suggests that the ideal sleep temperature is between 65°F and 68°F. On a flight, this might mean bringing a blanket or a handheld fan to maintain your comfort level.

Choosing the right seat on a plane can also significantly impact your comfort and rest. A window seat is often the best option for those planning to sleep, as it provides something to lean against and allows control over the window shade.

On the other hand, if you’re someone who needs to stretch or use the restroom frequently, an aisle seat might be a better choice. The experts recommended that investing a bit more to secure your preferred seat is worth it for a more restful trip.

Hydration is another often overlooked aspect of comfortable travel. Airplane cabins tend to be very dry, which can lead to dehydration, fatigue, and discomfort.

Drinking plenty of water before and during your trip is essential, as is avoiding caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.

Packing healthy snacks like nuts and fruits can also help maintain your energy levels without the sugar crash that often follows less nutritious snacks.

Finally, bringing along a travel pillow and blanket can make a significant difference in your ability to sleep, particularly on long flights or road trips.

These familiar items, along with noise-canceling headphones, can help create a peaceful environment that encourages rest.

If you're sensitive to light and noise, using a sleep mask and earplugs might be a good idea. Bringing something with a familiar scent, like a pillowcase from home, can also provide comfort and make it easier to relax and fall asleep.
