HAWAII ISLAND, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Hawaii island police have arrested and charged a 64-year-old Ocean View man on counts of animal abuse, promotion of a detrimental drug and drug paraphernalia.
Officers responded to the incident on Aug. 23 just before 5 p.m. when an unknown disturbance was reported near King Kamehameha Blvd and Aloha Blvd in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates Subdivision.
Reports said one caller reported "that a male party was in the area attempting to break up dogs that were fighting" to dispatch. In a separate phone call, dispatch was told a male party was abusing his dogs.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a deceased medium, black-colored dog lying in the middle of the roadway with several puncture wounds on the right side of its body.
A witness recalled the same male party to be kicking the dog right before the body was found.
The 64-year-old suspect was found one block away from the scene, hands covered in blood, a knife with blood on the blade and a marijuana smoking pipe in his possession.
Officials said the man acknowledged that the dog that was found belonged to him.
The man was then arrested and currently has a bail set at $5,000.
