Gilma weakens to tropical storm, Hector strengthens

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Tropical Storm Hone is well west of the Hawaiian islands and Gilma and Hector are moving westward to take its place.

Gilma was downgraded to a tropical storm, with the 11 a.m. update, and is rapidly weakening as it moves into the central Pacific.

The storm remains 850 miles east of Hilo with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, heading west at 15 mph.

Gilma is expected to weaken until it becomes a remnant low by Thursday night.

Hawaii could get storm remnants from Gilma late Thursday into Sunday.

Hector is a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.

Though Hector is currently closer to Baja California, it is moving west northwest at 12 mph.

Hector is expected to continue its way west northwest before it is expected to turn west on Wednesday.

The NWS said Hector is forecast to gradually weaken, beginning Tuesday night, before downgrading to a tropical depression by Wednesday night.
