KAILUA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Honolulu Ocean Safety opened its newest lifeguard tower at Kalama Beach Park on Wednesday, a much-needed tower that has been in the works for decades.
Wake Up 2Day's Chris Latronic went live from Kailua to learn more and witness a traditional Hawaiian blessing performed by Kahu and retired Ocean Safety lifeguard Dennis Sallas.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, Honolulu City Councilwoman Esther Kia‘āina, acting director for Honolulu Ocean Safety Kurt Lager and current and retired lifeguards attended the historic blessing.
“Our Honolulu Ocean Safety Department is stepping up like never before, making sure that everyone who enjoys our beaches feels secure and protected in our waters. Our commitment to public safety is unwavering, and we’re dedicated to bringing this heightened level of care and vigilance to every beach across the island, so residents and visitors can enjoy our beautiful shores with peace of mind,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi.
In the last five years, lifeguards stationed at Kailua Beach Park responded to more than 500 911 calls in Kailua Bay and along the shoreline. Amongst the 911 calls, nearly 100 were in the area of the new tower and were for emergencies including drownings, medical calls, missing persons, boaters in distress and shark sightings.
Before the tower opening, a 40-year-old man was caught in the rip current and needed help to the shore by bystanders. EMS transported him to an emergency room after swallowing water and experiencing exhaustion. Ocean Safety mobile responders stood by for the remainder of the day and rescued three more people, including a child.
“Kailua Beach is one of several beaches where we needed more lifeguard coverage. This is an exciting time for Ocean Safety and because of our city and resident support we are continuing to increase lifeguarding services to help ensure beachgoers are safe,” said Kurt Lager, Acting Director of Honolulu Ocean Safety.
