HONOLULU (KHON2 -- Starting August 28, Hawaii residents can add their REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and state identification cards to Apple Wallet on iPhones and Apple Watches.
These digital IDs are currently accepted at the TSA checkpoint at of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, select Apple Stores, and in some apps requiring age or identity verification.
During this initial rollout, Hawaii drivers and ID holders can set up their digital credentials by tapping the + button in Apple Wallet, selecting “Driver’s license or State ID,” and following the setup instructions.
While digital IDs offer convenience, users still need to carry their physical cards.
Digital IDs can't replace physical identification for interactions with law enforcement.
To present a digital ID, users simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a reader. The device will show the requested information, which is shared only after the user authorizes it with Face ID or Touch ID.
This process ensures that users don’t have to hand over their devices.
Businesses can now use apps like Tap2iD Mobile, Veriscan, and Mobile ID Verify to accept digital IDs for age verification.
These apps ensure privacy by only providing the necessary information, such as a photo and age, and they do not allow businesses to store or screenshot this data.

iPhone 8 or later with iOS 16.5 or later, and an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with WatchOS 9.5 or later are required to be able to access this feature.
