HONOLULU (KHON2) -- It's almost time to break out your running shoes. The annual Kaiwi Coast Run and Walk is set to take place on November 24, in East Honolulu.
The event begins at sunrise at Sandy Beach, and takes runners and walkers on a 4-mile route up the coast to Maunalua Bay.
"Most people don't run, they enjoy the scenery, they take pictures they stop and look at everything that they can see on the Kaiwi Coast that they can't see when they're driving in a car," explains Carol Jaxon with the Kaiwi Coast Run and Walk.
The event is a fundraiser for Hui Nalu Canoe Club, and also other community organizations that have worked to preserve the Kaiwi Coast line.
"Hui Nalu Canoe Club puts on the race and part of the fees help us, its our fundraiser to take care of our canoes and do everything we need to do to run the club," Jaxon says. "But also we like to give back to the community monetarily to Livable Hawaii Kai Hui, Maunalua Fishpond Heritage Center that protects the fishponds between Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai, Maunalua.net, and the Hawaii Kai Lions, they do the rescue tubes on all the beaches that don't have lifeguards."
The Kaiwi Coast Run and Walk is limited to 3,000 participants. It's the only time of year that this stretch of Kalanianaole Highway is closed to cars, and only open to pedestrians.
"It's going to be our 10th anniversary year," Jaxon said. "We have sponsors that have been with us since year one that we really appreciate and a new presenting sponsor in UHA Health Insurance."
The early registration deadline is Saturday, after that the entry fee goes up. You can find out more details and register for the run at https://www.kaiwicoastrun.org/.
