HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Gas prices continue trending downward across the nation, yet prices at many Hawaii gas stations remain stable. Some experts said there may be some relief for Hawaii drivers on the way.
The American Automobile Association Spokesperson Gianella Ghiglino said gas prices in Hawaii are likely to follow the rest of the nation’s.
"Gas prices tend to climb a lot faster than they tend to come down,” said Ghiglino. “So we can expect prices in Hawaii to continue to follow the trend of the rest of the country. However, we can't say how quickly that will happen."
Ghiglino said Hawaii gas prices historically sit above the national average, the current average in Hawaii is $4.75 for a gallon of gas, while the national average is $3.44.
Analysts said the national prices are trending lower due to shallow demand and strong supply.
Some Oahu drivers are counting on AAA calculations that Hawaii prices will indeed follow the rest of the nation.
Oahu driver Mike Powell said, "Right now it's crazy, everything the whole economy is crazy right now food prices, gas prices it's ridiculous."
Despite Hawaii gas prices being higher than the national average there are some ways to save. Experts encourage drivers to shop around for the best value, the location of a gas station could matter.
Ghiglino said, "For example at the end of a freeway tend to be a little higher than a gas station near a residential street. because more people are going to stop leaving the freeway or entering the freeway."
Prices also vary by island, Kauai is the most pricey at $5.25 a gallon, followed by Hawaii Island at $4.98, Maui at $4.80 and Oahu at $4.64.
According to AAA, Hawaii’s gallon of gas has gone down six cents from last month.
