HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Mayor Mitch Roth announced Friday that the Waipio Valley Access Road will reopen to Hawaii Island residents who hold a valid driver's license, following minimal impact from Tropical System Gilma.
The reopening will adhere to the terms set in the Mayor's Emergency Proclamation, which aims to ensure the safety of all road users.
The Department of Parks and Recreation has confirmed that all existing camping permits remain valid, and no closures of beach parks or overnight camping are expected at this time.
Nonetheless, the County advises residents and visitors to check the County of Hawaii Hazard Map for updates before making any weekend plans due to the unpredictable nature of weather conditions.
"We're thankful that the forecast is showing better, drier, and safer weather for our island this weekend," Mayor Roth said. "However, we know how quickly conditions can change, so we urge everyone to stay vigilant, informed, and focused on safety."
Residents planning activities are encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts through the Hawaii County Civil Defense website to receive real-time updates and information on any potential changes.
