"Research has shown that within five years of retirement, if the seniors donʻt get busy, donʻt get active, donʻt keep their mind working, theyʻll pass away. Our job is not to let that happen. We want them to be as busy as possible," said Steve Santiago, Honolulu Senior Coordinator.

A step in that direction is an Aloha Friday day out on the town with a seniorsʻ fun walk scheduled for Sept. 13.

"Itʻs a great event. Seniors going to get out, take a little stroll in the morning, get some shopping in and weʻre going to entertain them with some questions to keep them focused as they walk around the mall."

It begins at 10 a.m. at Pearlridge Center.

The whole family is invited.

"They can do it with their friends. They can do it with family. Letʻs say you have a grandchild or a younger daughter or son, they can walk with mom, dad through the mall, enjoy the different things they see but also the information fair is open to everyone."

They can also enjoy a scavenger hunt.

"The scavenger hunt will focus on different stores in the mall, just to get them walking a little bit more so it will keep their mind active and get a little bit of exercise at the same time," said Karen Castillo-Ben, Honolulu DPR Senior Specialist.

Then there will be an informational fair with booths and 30 vendors.

The City said it was to keep kupuna active with mind and body with clubs and large events.
