MANOA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- A burst of color was unveiled in Manoa to mark the completion of extensive renovations at Manoa Marketplace.
On Tuesday, Hawaii-based owner and developer, Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. announced the newest piece of artwork completed by local artist Shar Tuiʻasoa of Punky Aloha Studio.
Inspiration was drawn from the moʻolelo and rich history of Manoa Valley, led by the Manoa Heritage Center.
The 34 by 34-foot mural features "four wahine gathered in a position of strength and unity that honors Manoa's traditions, landscapes and diverse heritage."
I wanted the mural to speak to community and aloha. Manoa Marketplace is packed with small, locally-owned businesses and the people who support them. The mural adds beauty to the shopping center and is a visual reminder of the warmth that defines this community.

The completion of the mural marks the end of the multi-million dollar renovations made to modernize the popular neighborhood shopping center.
Renovations include new public amenities such as shaded outdoor seating, native landscaping, energy-efficient lighting and a keiki play area at the central plaza.
"Manoa Marketplace has served the community for over four decades. This mural is a testament to our commitment to enhancing the customer experience and providing public spaces to celebrate local voices," said property manager at Alexander & Baldwin, Sarah Mandeville.
The shopping center is home to Safeway, Longs and 60 other tenants, some that are longtime favorites.
