HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The Hawi Transfer Station is closed today, September 22, 2024, following the improper disposal of an unidentified liquid, later confirmed to be transformer oil, in a waste chute.
The Hawaii Fire Department is collaborating with the Department of Environmental Management to safely contain and remove the substance.
Authorities report that there is no immediate threat to public safety.
While the station remains closed for cleanup and safety measures, a reopening date has yet to be determined.
Residents are advised to utilize alternative transfer stations until further notice.
