HONOLULU (KHON2) - Better Business Bureau wants to warn us to be on the lookout for employment scams. The nonprofit says these fake job opportunities are typically advertised as remote opportunities from companies you've never heard of.
A new version of the scheme involves the fraudsters impersonating recognizable and trusted brands.
According to Cameron Nakashima of the BBB, since the beginning of the year, Hawaii residents have reported over $86,000 in losses to employment scams. An additional $73,000 was attempted but not completed.
Nakashima says one of the best ways to keep your personal information safe is to make sure you are dealing with a legitimate company with a solid reputation. Check the website URL, and look up the company on sites like Google, Glass Door, and the Better Business Bureau website BBB.org to vet legitimacy and learn about the business's reputation.
