HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Starting Monday, beachgoers will once again be able to access Mokulua Nui Island, which has been closed since July due to a monk seal giving birth on the shore.
Officials report that the seal pup, named Kaiwa, has been successfully weaned and is now venturing out to sea independently in search of food.
As the pup is likely to return along with other monk seals, the public is reminded to maintain a safe distance to protect the animals and their habitat.
