HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Access to Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve on Hawaii Island will be restored starting October 4, 2024, at noon.
The Kahaualea Trail, also known as the Captain’s Trail, will reopen simultaneously.
The reserve had been closed since mid-September due to unsafe conditions linked to volcanic activity at Kilauea Volcano.
With the recent decrease in activity, public access can now be reinstated.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) advises visitors to check eruption information on the U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory website before planning their trip.
