HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Sea Life Park is set to ignite the excitement this weekend with the third annual fire knife competition, "Legacy—The Siva Afi," returning to East Oahu.
Chris Latronic of WakeUp2Day reported live from Makapu‘u Meadows, sharing details about the highly anticipated event.
Hosted by Malu Productions and Tali's Polynesia, the competition will take place on October 5, 2024, honoring the legacy of Freddie Letuli, recognized as the Father of the Fire Knife Dance.
The event will feature a variety of divisions showcasing world-class competitors vying for impressive prizes.
Attendees can expect dazzling fire knife performances, as well as booths from local craft vendors, live music, and an array of food and beverages available for purchase.
Freddie Letuli's journey began in 1946 when he transformed a dance form into a global phenomenon. Inspired by a baton twirler and Hindu fire eater, Letuli set his knives ablaze while performing at an international expo in San Francisco.
His performances captivated audiences worldwide, and he dedicated his life to training young people in Samoan arts and culture, earning the title of Paramount Chief Letuli Olo Uluao Misilagi in American Samoa.
