HONOLULU (KHON2) - "Infant Safe Sleep" month in Hawaii is observed in October to coincide with the "National Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness" month, which is held to increase the public's awareness of the high rates of preventable infant deaths through educational programs.
Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies is part of Safe Sleep Hawaii, a coalition led by the Hawaii Department of Health that emphasizes the need for parents, grandparents, relatives and childcare professionals to be educated on infant safe sleep to reduce infant mortality.
Parents, family members, and caregivers can follow the ABC's of safe sleep.
A – Alone. Keep the crib or playpen empty. B – on their Backs – Always place infants on their backs and on a firm surface to sleep. C – in a Crib.
Move infants that have fallen asleep in swings, strollers, or car seats into a crib.
