HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The Maunaulu parking area and associated trails reopened on Friday morning, October 11, as firefighters continue to combat the Makaopuhi Fire, a 78-acre wildfire in the remote East Rift Zone of Kilauea volcano.
The fire, which is currently 70% contained, poses no immediate threat to homes or structures. Park staff will be present at the Maunaulu parking lot to provide fire information and ensure visitor safety during ongoing helicopter operations.
The blaze was ignited by the September 15 eruption of Kilauea and has intensified recently due to dry conditions, including low humidity and wind.
Firefighters are facing challenges posed by difficult terrain, dense vegetation, and multiple burning snags, which increase the risk of reburning.
The Makaopuhi Fire poses a significant threat to Hawaiian ecosystems and rare plant species in the area as suppression efforts continue.
