HONOLULU (KHON2) — Grab all the candy you can with your kids this Halloween but remember these important safety reminders!
When the Trick or Treating frenzy begins, parents should always keep an eye on their keiki.
"We don't want any of the younger children to be unaccompanied," stated Honolulu Police Department Sergeant Thomas Koyanagi. "The first thing is probably to make sure that supervision is there with the kids at all times."
Officials recommend accessorizing costumes to be as visible as possible. Department of Transportation Highway Safety Specialist Christy Cower said parents can use glow sticks, reflective clothing or flashlights to brighten up costumes.
Drivers should also pay close attention and watch out for pedestrians. HPD said it will have more enforcement on the roads as the holidays approach.
"Make sure you have a plan for rideshare or to take a taxi," said Cower. "If you are walking along the road, please don't dart between cars. When you reach to a crosswalk, make sure that you make eye contact with the drivers and make sure you cross at a marked crosswalk or an intersection."
Before digging into all the goodies, parents should check the candy for anything that could be dangerous.
