HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A recount has confirmed that incumbent Republican Elijah Pierick defeated Democrat Corey Rosenlee by just 20 votes in the race for House District 39.

However, uncounted ballots due to signature issues could still impact the final outcome.

Elections officials said the automatic recount, triggered by the razor-thin margin, upheld Pierick's victory.

But they also revealed that approximately 2,500 ballots on Oahu remain uncounted because of signature problems — either voters failed to sign the envelope, or the signature did not match what is on file.

Of those, 75 are tied to District 39.

Voters with signature issues have until November 13 to correct their ballots.

Honolulu elections officials are urging residents to track their ballots to ensure they are counted.

In a separate race on Maui, 1,069 voters have been notified of signature discrepancies, a number significant enough to potentially affect the outcome of the Maui Council race between Tom Cook and Kelly King.

That race was decided by just 117 votes.
