MANOA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- According to Honolulu Fire Department investigators, a house fire in Manoa was deemed accidental due to a water heater.
On Tuesday, Nov. 5, firefighters responded to an early morning fire call on Manoa Road. Units arrived at a two-story home just before 5 a.m.
An aggressive fire attack was initiated against flames at the rear of the home while first responders attempted to gain access inside the structure.
Flames were brought under control at 5:31 a.m. before being fully extinguished at 5:59 a.m.
No occupants were inside the house at the time of the incident. Two residents and their dog are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
Upon further investigation, officials determined a "water heater ignited clothing items being stored too close to the appliance."
Officials estimated $1,005,000 in damage to the building and another $40,000 for its contents.
