The incident happened on Tuesday, Nov. 12 around 1 p.m. on Kailua Road, near the Kalanianaole Highway intersection.

One of the poles landed on a house. The homeowner, Rheanna Stancil-Williams said it could have been much worse.

"Looking at it from this angle, it's a lot," she said still in shock seeing a utility pole smashed into the roof of her house. Only one person was home at the time.

"We just went out for lunch and upon coming home, driving down Kailua road, I was telling my fiancé, 'Oh babe, look there's a pole in the park.' And then I said, 'Oh, there's another pole-down.' And as we were approaching up to the turn where the truck was, we noticed a pole on our house," she said.

The incident stemmed from a semitruck from Island Distributing, LLC trying to turn right onto Uluoa Street and getting hooked on overhead cables. Stancil-Williams said the driver told her neighbor he wasn't familiar with the area and misjudged things.

"As he continued the turn, that's when it tugged, and it was just that ripple effect on the road," she explained.

A spokesperson from Hawaiian Telcom confirmed six of their utility poles went down.

The heavy cables also damaged two palm trees, and privately owned walls along the block.

Hawaiian Telcom said some customers did lose service, but could not confirm how many.

One lane of Kailua Road in the Kailua-bound direction remains closed in the area, while crews work to make repairs.

Crew members on the scene said they believe this will take them all night long to fix. First, they have to put a new pole into the ground, then they have to transfer all the wires before removing the damaged poles.

Stancil-Williams won't know the extent of the damage to her roof until they remove the pole, but she is grateful it wasn't worse.

"We're just very fortunate that it didn't actually break through the house. It was definitely very scary, but thankfully, we weren't home and the kids are safe. I'm safe, you know, we're all safe," she added. "But there's gonna be a lot of noise until they get that fixed."

KHON2 reached out to Island Distributing, LLC for comment and we are waiting for a response.
