HONOLULU (KHON2) -- After almost six months of rigorous training and dedication, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services introduced their newest EMT Academy V graduates.
Seventeen graduates complete the training program, learning everything they need to handle Oahu's emergency situations effectively.
Through their training, recruits learned hands-on training for essential procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, establishing IV lines and wound care.
Each recruit also learned numerous ambulance operations, including emergency driving.
Graduates, family and friends gathered at the John A. Burns School of Medicine to celebrate their accomplishments and perservearance.
For graduates like Michael Gorman, completing the training represents an opportunity to serve the community and help better lives.
"I'm excited about the opportunity. It's gonna be a great experience and we've got a lot to do," Gorman explained. "It's a stressful job. It needs to be done correctly, so we trained for it. We're excited to get out there."
According to Gorman, the experience is divided into lots of academic work and spending time in the field to learn the job.
One recruit, Wyatt Ernst, was recognized as the top recruit. The leadership reward was presented to Christine Chen.
Choosing a career as an EMT is both physically demanding and emotionally challenging, yet it is one of the most courageous callings. As Mayor, I am committed to supporting their success and ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to serve our community with excellence.
Rick Blangiardi, Honolulu Mayor
Graduates are expected to begin working in the field full time in December.
