PAHOA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- A 77-year-old Pahoa man remains in custody and was charged with attempted murder after he tried to kill his wife, according to Hawaii Police Department.
Police responded to a domestic incident shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22 at the Nanawale Estates home of Lowell Thomas Pofahl and his wife.
Dispatch received the call from "a male identifying himself as Pofahl" who stated he attempted to kill his 76-year-old wife.
Upon arriving at the scene, Pofahl was arrested and taken into custody without incident.
Officers entered the home to Pofahl's wife lying in a pool of blood with severe life-threatening injuries.
Police and the Hawaii Fire Department aided the victim before transporting her to Hilo Medical Center Emergency Room then later transported to the Queen's Medical Center on Oahu.
According to police, she suffered a fractured skull, brain bleed, concussion, partial thumb amputation, puncture wounds and lacerations around her body. She remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The next day, a shotgun and other various weapons were recovered from the home. The weapons were "reportedly used to beat and injure the victim", said police.
Prosecutors charged Pofahl with attempted murder, assault, abuse of a family/household member and carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony.

Pofahl appeared in his initial court appearance on Monday, Nov. 25 at Hilo District Court. His bail is set at $1,655,000.
