HONOLULU (KHON2) -- It's getting hotter. While our islands aren't experiencing the intensity of the heat domes that the continent is experiencing, we are still dealing with some pretty high heat temperatures this summer.

So, since it's National Hydration Day right around the corner, KHON2.com decided it was time to provide some tips and insights on how to stay hydrated.

Hydration is super important for keeping your body and mind in top shape. Your body needs water to keep your heart, muscles and skin healthy.

Water also helps your brain stay focused and clear. When you drink enough water, you can think better, feel more energetic and keep your body running smoothly.

Hydration long-term

If you keep your body well-hydrated over time, you can avoid lots of health problems. Staying hydrated helps prevent kidney stones, UTIs, kidney failure, keeps your skin looking good and can even help you avoid serious issues like diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.

Plus, it helps you feel good day-to-day!

National Hydration Day is observed annually on June 23rd to emphasize the importance of staying hydrated, especially during the hot summer months. This day serves as a reminder to drink enough water and stay hydrated to maintain overall health and well-being.

Importance of hydration

  1. Maintains body functions: Water is crucial for regulating body temperature, keeping joints lubricated and ensuring that organs function properly.
  2. Boosts physical performance: Adequate hydration is vital for physical activities. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, reduced endurance and decreased strength.
  3. Enhances brain function: Staying hydrated improves concentration, mood and cognitive function. Dehydration can cause headaches, confusion and irritability.
  4. Aids digestion: Water helps in digestion by breaking down food and absorbing nutrients more effectively. It also prevents constipation.
  5. Promotes skin health: Proper hydration keeps the skin healthy and glowing by maintaining its elasticity and moisture.

Tips for staying hydrated

  1. Drink plenty of water: Aim to drink at least 8 cups (64 ounces) of water daily. Adjust your intake based on your activity level, climate and overall health.
  2. Eat hydrating foods: Incorporate water-rich foods into your diet, such as cucumbers, watermelons oranges and strawberries.
  3. Carry a water bottle: Keep a reusable water bottle with you to ensure you can drink water throughout the day, especially when you’re on the go.
  4. Set reminders: Use apps or set alarms to remind you to drink water regularly.
  5. Monitor your hydration: Check your urine color as a simple way to monitor hydration. Light yellow indicates proper hydration, while dark yellow suggests you need more water.

Things that boost hydration

  • Fruits and vegetables: Foods like watermelon, cucumbers and strawberries are high in water.
  • Soup and broth: These are also good sources of extra hydration.

Things that cause dehydration

  • Soda and coffee: These can actually make you more thirsty because they contain caffeine.
  • Salty snacks: Eating lots of chips and other salty foods can make your body lose water.

Remember, staying hydrated helps you feel great and keeps your body healthy. Drink up and enjoy the benefits!
