HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Honolulu officials responded to a fatal shark attack that claimed the life of a city lifeguard just before 1 p.m. on Sunday, on Oahu's North Shore.
According to officials, 49-year-old Perry was found by a surfer with multiple apparent shark bites in waters off Malaekahana.
Tamayo Perry joined ocean safety in the summer of 2016. He works at one of the most iconic spots on the North Shore--Pipeline.
Before becoming a lifeguard, Perry was a well-known surfer.
"He’s a family friend, a household name the Lifeguard community is going to be missed and the overall community and all around the world," Jamie O'Brien told KHON2. "He’s a very special person to me and a person I looked up to my whole life."
Perry was loved by the community and is remembered to be a surf legend who is gone too soon.
