According to HPD's Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section, a 57-year-old female was operating a moped and traveling westbound on Kalanianaʻole Highway.

This is when an unidentified motorist attempted to overtake the moped; but rather than successfully navigating the unnecessarily dangerous maneuver, the unidentified driver struck the moped and its driver.

And rather than stopping to render aid and assistance, the driver fled the scene.

"The unidentified male motorist continued traveling westbound on Kalanianaʻole Highway without stopping to render aid or provide information," according to HPD.

The hit-and-run caused the 57-year-old moped driver to be ejected onto the roadway. She was transported to a local area hospital in serious condition by the Honolulu Emergency medical services, according to HPD.

The 57-year-old moped driver was wearing a helmet at the time of the hit-and-run, said HPD.

"While investigating, the 57-year-old female moped rider declined to seek prosecution," said HPD.

According to HPD's traffic site, there have been 50 serious or fatal traffic related incidents on Oʻahu for 2024.
