HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A high pressure system will move south to just north of Kauai on Thursday and Friday, reducing the trade winds to light levels and allowing "land and sea breezes "kona" to develop across the state. The high will lift northward over the weekend, gradually strengthening the trade winds to moderate and locally breezy conditions from Sunday through the middle of next week.
Stable and dry conditions continue over the islands. This stability will limit shower activity through the weekend. The trade wind inversion will lift early next week, slightly increasing trade wind showers on Monday and Tuesday, but conditions will remain drier than normal. A more typical trade wind pattern is expected to return by mid-next week.
