HONOLULU (KHON2) -- As the demand for solar energy continues to rise, and more government grants and subsidies aim to make solar energy more accessible, Better Business Bureau is seeing an increase in solar panel scams targeting homeowners. Cameron Nakashima with Better Business Bureau joined Wake Up 2Day with more details on how to avoid solar panel scammers.

Cameron shared, "Common solar panel scams include "free solar panels" offers, oftentimes presented by door-to-door salespeople or through online ads using high-pressure tactics. These bad guys are after your personal information, such as your social security number, credit and bank information, and large amounts of your money, claiming that after you pay them you will get a reimbursement from the government. Once hired, you’ll learn that these scammers have tricked you. They do little to no work to install the panels, and any work they do is low quality, and the refund you get from the government is either less than expected or nothing at all."

Cameron also provided some useful tips on how to ensure the solar panel company you hire is legitimate:

1. Research companies and business owners thoroughly before hiring them to work on your home.

2. Get multiple bids from different installers. BBB makes this quick and easy with a get-a-quote tool.

3. Ask for and check references from previous customers.

4. Take time to review contracts and ask questions. This is a big investment and a big decision, so get a copy of the contract, read it carefully, and make sure you understand the costs and rebates outlined in the contract before signing.
