Metereologist Tedd Florendo with KHON's sister station KLAS have been warning of scorching temperatures for days.

"We have dangerous heat that will stay at 110 degrees and above for quite some time," said Florendo during his 9th Island Forecast report last week.

On Sunday, at around 4 p.m., KLAS recorded Las Vegas hitting 120 degrees, setting a new all-time high daily temperature, according to the National Weather Service.

This breaks the previous record of 117 degrees, which was previously reached in 2021, 2017, 2013, 2005, and 1942.

"It was really hot, but we handled it," said Hauula resident Michael Tengaro, who recently flew back to O'ahu after a trip to Las Vegas to see family.

Adam Lee and Illeanna Fahrner, residents of Waialua, also experienced the scorching heat firsthand during their trip to Las Vegas.

"It was just blistering hot sun from 6 a.m. all the way to like 9 p.m.," Farhner said.

"[It felt] really dry. Dry heat is different than Hawaii's beautiful trade winds. The humid weather made us really appreciate the weather back home," Lee added.

"Yeah, honestly, we stayed inside for the whole week. So, I don't think I've ever just stayed in air conditioning for a whole entire week without going outside once," said Fahrner, when describing the measures they took to cope with the extreme heat.

Reflecting on their experience, the travelers offered advice for anyone planning to visit Las Vegas during this heatwave.

"I think you better bring some cool towels. Yeah, towels put around the neck, get them wet with cold water and put it around the neck so you don't pass out," Tengaro suggested.

"Definitely stay hydrated. If you're going to go outside, have protection, wear sunscreen," said Fahrner. "I've never been in a heat wave like that before. So, it was a huge surprise. And I'm just happy we survived."
