WAIEHU, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Multiple Maui Fire Department units are responding to an early morning brush fire on the mauka side of Kahekili Highway near Makaala Drive.
Officials initiated a road closure on Kahekili Highway between Makaala Drive and Waiehu Beach Road while firefighters battle the flames.
As of now, Maui County estimates the fire to be about 19 acres, with private sector partners and MFD making "good progress" towards its containment.
While no mandatory evacuations have been ordered, MEMA has issued a voluntary evacuation for the Waiehu area for Wailuku Country Estates and Puuohala Village.
Those who have respiratory issues or concerns are advised to stay indoors or leave the area, especially Waiehu Heights, Waiehu Terrace and Waiehu Country Estates residents due to heavy smoke in the area.
Maui County said residents affected by the smoke and would like to evacuate can head to the temporary refuge area at Keopulani Park.
