HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Hawaii Energy, in collaboration with the County of Hawaii Department of Environmental Management, is launching a recycling drive for old refrigerators and freezers on Hawaii Island.
Scheduled for Saturday, August 24, the event invites Puna area residents to drop off any working refrigerator or freezer and receive $100 per unit. The drive will take place at Keaau Middle School from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Hawaii Energy’s Rid-A-Fridge program offers an easy way for residents to recycle outdated, energy-draining appliances,” said Caroline Carl, executive director of Hawaii Energy. “Not only does this help lower their electricity bills, but it also keeps these old units out of landfills.”
Interested residents need to apply in advance, with applications available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The drive is open to residents in the zip codes 96749, 96778, and 96771.
To apply, residents should download the application form from the County of Hawaii’s website and email it to denise.e.nakamura@leidos.com by August 20.
For those opting to use postal mail, the deadline is August 18.
“The Rid-A-Fridge program not only helps reduce illegal dumping but also empowers families to improve their energy efficiency,” said Alex White, recycling specialist with the County of Hawaii Department of Environmental Management.
Since its inception in 2010, the Rid-A-Fridge program has recycled over 6,000 appliances across Hawaii Island, Maui County, and Oahu.
