HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Back-to-school season is upon us, and Palama Settlement is celebrating with a back-to-school safety event to help keep keiki safe.
Palama Settlement, a dedicated non-profit organization serving the Kalihi and Palama neighborhoods, is partnering with the Honolulu Police Department, the Hawaii Department of Transportation, and local legislators to host the event, aimed at enhancing traffic safety and raising awareness about pedestrian safety.
"We are excited to collaborate with our local partners to promote a safe environment for our students as they head back to school," said Sam Aiona, Executive Director of Palama Settlement. "As the new academic year begins, ensuring the safety of our children is paramount, and this event seeks to encourage vigilant driving in school zones and is a crucial step in reminding our community of the importance of driving carefully around school areas."
The event will feature community volunteers holding traffic safety signs to catch the attention of motorists, emphasizing the need for reduced speeds and increased awareness in school zones.
Participants will include local lawmakers, representatives from the Honolulu Police Department, and members of the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
The event is scheduled for Monday, August 5 at 7 a.m. at the corner of Vineyard Blvd. and Palama Street.
