LAHAINA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina, Maui, has established a new temporary campus at Ka'anapali Resort.
On Sunday, over 150 attendees, including school and church representatives, project stakeholders, and government officials participated in a blessing event held for the newly opened site.
Sacred Hearts School, a ministry of Maria Lanakila Catholic Church, was destroyed in the 2023 wildfires, while the church miraculously survived.
The school was founded in 1862 and has been an integral part of West Maui. They have served the community for over 150 years.
Three weeks after the wildfires, Sacred Hearts School was the first Lahaina school to reopen for face-to-face learning by setting up an emergency school site: classroom tents and makeshift classrooms with no electricity in the church's yard.
Both in-person and online learning for grades kindergarten through high school were supported.
This new temporary campus -- renovated classrooms, a new playground and multipurpose court -- was completed two months ago at an estimated cost of $2.5 million, made possible with the help of school officials, the Diocese of Honolulu, Lahaina's Maria Lanakila Catholic Church, landowners, community members, and various foundations.
Sacred Heart School, Ka'anapali campus location: 2530 Kekaa Drive, Lahaina 96761
