HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The first Maui wildfire survivors have begun moving into the Hale ʻO Lāʻie interim housing project in Kihei on Monday, Governor Josh Green announced.
As of Monday morning, eight households were in the process of relocating to the complex. More are expected to follow this week.
Hale ʻO Lāʻie will offer around 150 free hotel-style studios and studio suites to survivors. Over 500 households have applied to these units.
Aside from the Hale ʻO Lāʻie interim housing project, the Hawai‘i Interim Housing Program also features the Ka Laʻi Ola project in West Maui. Ka Laʻi Ola will provide up to 450 modular homes for those ineligible for FEMA assistance once the construction is completed.
