Officials said lifeguards rescued 11 people at Sandy Beach and issued more than 300 warnings. Right next door, two people were rescued and more than 200 warnings were given to those swimming in Makapuu Beach waters.

According to Ocean Safety, the surf was around four to six feet with a strong current.

"We anticipate a busy summer and urge people to check in with their lifeguards before going into the ocean," said spokesperson Shayne Enright.

A high surf advisory is in effect for all south-facing shores through Monday. Ocean Safety reminds beachgoers that wave heights could appear more mellow as beaches become crowded.

“The southwest direction the shore break will flare up even at half point we have surfers that go out, get injuries, people swimming in the shore break," said Honolulu Ocean Safety Lt. Tristan Fabro.
